Every country has different requirements for running a retreat. We can't advise on local law — but here are the categories to check before you list.
Common categories
- Business registration
— sole prop, LLC equivalent, or full company depending on scale.
- Hospitality / accommodation permit
— required in some jurisdictions if you sleep guests overnight.
- Food handling licence
— if you cook for guests on-site.
- Health practitioner licence
— for hosts offering specific therapies (massage, counselling) in regulated jurisdictions.
- Zoning
— some residential zones forbid commercial retreats.
- Tourist tax / occupancy tax
— collect-and-remit in many cities.
How to find out
Local accountant or business lawyer is usually the fastest path. Government tourism boards often have a "starting a retreat" guide too.
Tips
Set up compliance before listing — fixing it later when something breaks is much more expensive.
